On May 26, 2023, the Chip Conference · Frontier Science Forum was held in Wuxi Binhu. Experts from domestic key chip research institutes and universities, representatives from domestic and foreign chip industry enterprises, and investors gathered by the Taihu Lake to discuss “chip” opportunities, seek common developments in the “chip” field, and move together towards the future with the “chip”.

“Core” Achievements: Release of China’s Top 10 Advances in Chip Science.

This event is coordinated by the People’s Government of Wuxi City and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It is co-hosted by the People’s Government of Wuxi Binhu District, Wuxi Science and Technology Bureau, and Chip Journal. The event organizers include The Liyuan Economic Development Zone Administrative Committee and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Wuxi Photonics Chip Research Institute (CHIPX).

The conference unveiled the “Chip 2022: China’s Top 10 Advances in Chip Science.” According to reports, the selection was initiated by the comprehensive international journal, Chip, which is the only journal focusing on chip-related research globally. The evaluation involved tens of thousands of online votes and the participation of Chip’s editorial board experts. From 30 nominated achievements, the final top ten advances were selected, including:

  1. Professor Ren Tianling’s team from Tsinghua University: First realization of sub-1-nanometer gate length transistors.
  2. Academician Liu Ming and Researcher Zhang Feng’s team from the Institute of Microelectronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Associate Professor Wang Xinghua’s team from Beijing Institute of Technology: Macrochip based on 3D resistive switching memory for in-memory computing.
  3. Professor Jin Xianmin’s team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Quantum superiority of memristive Boltzmann sampling.
  4. Professor Yin Shouyi’s team from Tsinghua University and Beijing CogniMinds Intelligence Technology Co., Ltd: AI training chip supporting multi-granularity sparsity.
  5. Professor Wang Xingjun’s team from Peking University: Emergence of a new type of silicon-based integrated on-chip photonic system.
  6. Researcher Jin Kuijuan, Researcher Ge Chen, and Academician Yang Guozhen’s team from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences: Optoelectronic neural synapse with light-induced VO2 nonvolatile phase transition.
  7. Professor Mai Liqiang and Researcher Yan Mengyu’s team from Wuhan University of Technology: Field-effect energy storage chip with doubled performance.
  8. Researcher Meng Guowen and Researcher Han Fangming’s team from the Institute of Solid State Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences: High-performance filtering capacitors.
  9. Professor Chen Lin’s team from Fudan University: Wearable, ultra-low-power, and reconfigurable neuromorphic computing electronic devices.
  10. Professor Shi Luping’s team from Tsinghua University: Neuromorphic computing chip – Tianji X.

This selection aims to establish the most authoritative, credible, and influential award in the domestic chip field, further enhancing the public’s attention to cutting-edge chip research in China and supporting the development of “China Chips.” In the future, Chip Journal will organize more conferences and forums focused on chips, providing a high-level platform for communication and collaboration among chip professionals in academia, industry, and research.

“Core” Platform: Photonic Quantum Industry Angel Investment Fund Established.

Focusing on early-stage, small-scale, and “hard-tech” investments, the intention of establishing the Wuxi Photonic Quantum Industry Angel Investment Fund is to further the transformation and implementation of research achievements in the new generation of photonic chips and quantum computing industries. Wuxi Innovative Investment Group Co., Ltd., Binhu State-owned Capital Investment Co., Ltd., and Far-sighted Private Equity Fund Management Co., Ltd. have signed an intention agreement for the establishment of the fund.

In the future, the fund will center around the pilot line platform of Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Wuxi Photonics Chip Research Institute. It will engage in venture capital investments focused on photonic chips as the underlying technology, driving innovations in the new generation of photonic technologies such as photon computing, quantum photonics, optical artificial intelligence, and optical communication. This will further facilitate the transformation and implementation of research achievements in the new generation of photonic chips and quantum computing industries in Wuxi.

During the conference, Liyuan Economic Development Zone and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Wuxi Photonics Chip Research Institute also signed project agreements respectively for “Silicon-based Photonic Integrated Chips for Data Centers and High-performance Computing” and “Industrial Application of Multi-element Heterogeneous Integrated Optical MEMS Sensors.”

“Core” Needs: Collecting Technical Challenges in the Photonic Quantum Industry.

Sound the “assembly call” for core technological breakthroughs, explore the “guiding beacon” for leading new industry trends, and drive the market to become a “barometer” for industrial development. The event launched a global call for technical challenges in the photonic quantum industry, advancing the application of hardware and algorithm technologies represented by photonic chips and quantum computing in the development of the industry.

“The technical challenges being solicited this time focus on areas such as quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum security, photon computing, artificial intelligence, high-speed optical communication, optoelectronic co-packaging, and optical sensing. They are representative and can accelerate the breakthrough of ‘bottleneck’ technologies that hinder industrial development,” explained the relevant person in charge from Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Wuxi Photonics Chip Research Institute.

“Core” Power, Joining Hands to Propel the Integrated Circuit Industry to New Heights.

Strong chips lead to a strong industry, and a thriving chip industry contributes to economic prosperity. The national microelectronics industry base in the southern region, Wuxi, has been carefully nurtured for many years and has established a complete integrated circuit industry chain, covering chip design, wafer manufacturing, packaging testing, equipment, materials, and supporting services. In 2022, the city’s large-scale integrated circuit enterprises achieved an output value of 209.15 billion yuan, ranking second in the country in terms of industry scale. In recent years, Binhu has focused on the integrated circuit industry with chip semiconductors as its core, collaborating with top institutions and companies such as Tsinghua University’s Wuxi Applied Technology Institute, ChinaCore, and Zhuosheng Micro, forming a cluster of high-quality enterprises covering CPU, GPU, DPU, EDA design, packaging testing, supporting services, and application areas. Additionally, there has been forward-looking layout in the new field of photonic chips, supporting Binhu, and even Wuxi, to seize the “core” high ground in the development of quantum technology and accelerate the process of “overtaking on the curve.”

The continuous emergence of new technologies, new business models, and new patterns requires the stimulation of scientific and technological potential through innovative ideas and the enhancement of scientific and technological efficiency through cooperation and exchanges. The conference sincerely invites guests, outstanding talents, and companies from both China and abroad to reach further consensus and cooperation in industrial development, contributing more to the frontiers of technological breakthroughs. The conference welcomes all kinds of talents to join hands with Binhu and gain wealth, friendships, and success in the innovative land of the chip industry. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to provide insightful advice, promote Binhu, and facilitate the settlement of more chip talents, facilitate the aggregation of more chip elements, and invest in more chip projects.
